Stuy is a drummer. He started as a very young kid and his mother has encouraged him throughout his childhood. She was a drummer and played with his dad in a band. Their band broke up when she got pregnant with Stuy, and it has always just been Stuy and his mom. Until Dummy came along. Now, Stuy finds himself kicked out of the house and crashing at his Uncle Lucky’s apartment. He left without his drum kit and is feeling quite sorry for himself. Then, he meets Dunks, a guitar player. The two of them hit it off and want to form a band. So they go out to seek other musicians. They end up finding two other musicians and the band goes out to play in the subways. This book is about finding family in unlikely places and the work it takes to let your music take you away. I didn’t know until I read the author’s note at the end of the book that this story was originally produced as an audiobook original a couple of years ago. That makes so much sense to me and I would bet that the audiobook production is fantastic. I read this one in print (digital ebook — thanks Netgalley). I appreciated the way it was written like a script. I know the students in my library will love this story and I can’t wait to purchase it for my school library. I highly recommend this book.
