It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? 3/24

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? –From Picture Books to YA is a weekly meme started by Jen at Teach Mentor Texts and Kellee at Unleashing Readers. This is a chance for bloggers to recap their week of reading and share their plans for the next reading adventures they will take. Visit the host blogs for a list of great blogs participating in this meme and a whole bunch of titles to add to your to-read lists.

March has turned out to be a lot busier than I thought it would be.  I had intended to participate fully in the Slice of Life Challenge, but soon figured out that there was more going on than I could keep up with.  I wrote about this and my tendency for perfectionism in this post.
I have been working on some things and now I am thinking ahead to next school year.  I am applying to some positions in my school district that would be more of a support position in schools, like coaching.  I am ready for a change, but experiencing a lot more anxiety about the possible change than I thought I would have.  Reading is my go-to solution for angst.  Therefore, I read a lot this week, but didn’t write as much as I thought I would.

Books I Finished This Week:

I absolutely LOVED Cress by Melissa Mayer.  This book really added complications into the plot of the series.  I can’t wait to read the other books and to find out what will happen for Earth in their battle with Lunar and Levana.  I highly recommend this series!

I met Shannon Hale this week.  My school hosted her for a school visit in her tour for Dangerous.  I was so excited to meet this author!  I watched Austenland last week and then read the book this week.  What a fun book!  I am a big Jane Austen fan and could absolutely relate with the protagonist.  So fun!

I love Matthew Quick’s books.  The characters are so real.  This one was a quick read and I was so wrapped up in the story right from the beginning.  I would absolutely recommend this one for adults.

The Shadow Throne was a great ending to the trilogy.  I enjoyed The False Prince and The Runaway King immensely and the story was wrapped up so well in this book.  I highly recommend this series for middle grade readers.

Books I Am Currently Reading:

I am listening to Sapphire Blue by Kerstin Gier. I really enjoyed Ruby Red and am loving this one too.  I am glad I got the audiobook.  I think I am enjoying the character more because of the narrator.  I also started reading More Than This by Patrick Ness.  I had no idea what the book was about so I was surprised when I started reading it.  I will be interested to see where the book goes from here.

What’s Next?

I don’t really know what I want to read next.  It will depend on my moods.  Since I have no shortage of books from which to choose, I shouldn’t have a problem finding something great to read.

Celebrations!

I didn’t get a chance to write my Saturday post with celebrations so I just want to mention a couple things here.  First, on Tuesday, Shannon Hale visited my school.  She did such an awesome job with her talk.  The students were incredibly engaged and my school was buzzing about books all week.  Second, because she mentioned James Dashner in her talk, my students are much more interested in our read aloud of The Maze Runner.  Some of them even went home immediately to look up the movie trailer that she mentioned.  Lastly, I was happy to notice that my students are getting better at finding evidence in their reading to back up their thoughts.  We were examining some opinion pieces in writing class and, without prompting, students were picking up their papers and reading lines from the article to demonstrate their points.
What are you reading this week?  What do you have to celebrate?  Any good recommendations for me?  I would love to hear from you in the comments.  Have a great reading week!

  1. I'm reading Dangerous right now, so pretty jealous you got to meet the author! I have The False Prince and Cress series to read. Just need to figure out how to read 10 books at the same time!!!

  2. Oh! I have More Than This in line for my next audiobook. I don't really have any idea what it's about either. Sometimes it's exciting going into a book blind. Cress was amazing and I really need to read more Matthew Quick. I really enjoyed Sorta Like a Rock Star. Have a great week! ~Megan

  3. Sorry you needed to drop from the writing, but maybe another time, Andrea. You always give me good book recs, so thanks much. I have the first two Mayer books, just have never read them, maybe someday. I do hear that others, too, liked Cress. Glad to hear about Shadow Throne too-I'll try to get to it soon.

  4. I am jealous of your reading this week–you read two books in series that I want to read. I've read Cinder, but haven't gotten to the sequels yet. And I want to read The False Prince because it is a huge hit with everyone.

    Happy reading this week 🙂

  5. Hi there Andrea. How exciting to hear about Shannon Hale visiting your school, that's great. I've read a lot about Cinder, but haven't gotten around to reading the series yet. It's good to know that the Shadow Throne is a great ending to the series, I did enjoy the first two books myself. I have a copy of More than This which I bought for myself last Christmas, am looking forward to reading it sometime this year. 🙂
